Expertise That Matters

ISA Certified Arborist

Not Every Tree Company Employs a Certified Arborist.

Anyone can start a tree company, buy a chainsaw, and call themselves a "tree expert." ISA certification is the only nationally recognized credential that proves a tree professional has passed comprehensive exams, met minimum experience requirements, and stays current with ongoing education.

For you as a property owner, that distinction matters — not just for your trees, but for your liability, your budget, and your safety.

At JC Tree Experts, Javier Castaneda Jr. is your ISA Certified Arborist and lead consultant on every job. When you call us, you're getting a certified expert — not a sub-contractor who may not be.

What It Is

What Is ISA Certification?

The ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) is the world's leading organization for tree care professionals. Their Certified Arborist credential requires candidates to:

  • Have a minimum of 3 years of full-time professional tree work experience
  • Pass a comprehensive exam covering tree biology, diagnosis, pruning, soil science, and safety
  • Earn continuing education units (CEUs) every 3 years to maintain certification
  • Adhere to ISA's code of ethics and industry standards

There is no shortcut to becoming ISA Certified. It is earned through experience, study, and ongoing professional development.

Why It Matters to You

How Certification Protects Your Property

ISA certification isn't just a title — it directly affects how your trees are diagnosed, pruned, and removed. Here's what you actually get when you hire a certified arborist.

Accurate Diagnosis

Certified arborists are trained to identify disease, pest damage, structural defects, and root problems — and distinguish a dying tree from one that can be saved. That distinction alone can save you the cost of unnecessary removal.

No Spike Climbing

Non-certified climbers often use tree spikes for convenience. Spikes puncture the bark and damage the cambium layer, creating wounds that invite disease. ISA standards prohibit spike-climbing on trees that are not being removed.

Proper Pruning Cuts

Bad pruning — topping, lion-tailing, flush cuts — shortens tree lifespan and creates hazards. A certified arborist knows where to cut, how much to remove, and how to leave a tree structurally sound for decades.

Liability Protection

If a tree falls and causes damage, an arborist report documenting tree condition and professional recommendations can be critical for insurance claims and legal disputes. Only ISA Certified Arborists can provide credible written reports.

No Unnecessary Work

A certified arborist won't recommend removal to generate a sale if the tree can be saved. Their obligation is to the tree's health and your best interest — backed by professional ethics standards.

Property Value

Healthy, well-maintained trees add 10–20% to property value according to USDA research. Improper pruning or unnecessary removals do the opposite. Certification means your trees are in hands that protect that investment.

When You Need a Report

Consulting Arborist Services

Beyond routine tree care, there are situations where you need a written professional opinion — from an arborist who can stand behind it.

Permits & Tree Removal Approvals

Many Bay Area cities require a written arborist report to approve the removal of protected trees. Javier can prepare the documentation you need.

Neighbor & HOA Disputes

When a tree's condition or placement becomes a legal matter, a certified arborist's written assessment carries professional weight that no contractor's opinion can match.

Pre-Purchase Tree Inspection

Buying a home with mature trees? We can inspect and assess condition, risk, and value — before you close — so there are no surprises after you move in.
